Midburn 2016

Midburn ( Hebrew : מידברן; Arabic : ميدبيرن) was a 6-day event held annually from 2014 to 2018 in the Negev desert in southern Israel . It was the Israeli version of the American Burning Man Festival. In 2019, the event will no longer take place in the previous form, as neither the previous location near Sde Boker nor another location is available.

The name is composed of midbar , the Hebrew word for desert, and burn , the reference to the American original and the burning of a large wooden sculpture, which always ends at the end.

Midburn took place on the Hebrew holiday Shavuot , i.e. H. in May or June.

In contrast to music festivals, there was no central stage or a fixed program. Rather, the event was conceived as a temporary "city", arranged around a circular open space on which art installations were created and art cars could drive during the event . A wooden sculpture was built in the middle, which was burned at the end of the event.

Hundreds of "theme camps" were set up by committed participants in the concentric "city" itself, which the participants designed independently. It involved a wide variety of projects of all sizes, from art, music, dance, esoteric, food and construction to self-awareness groups of all kinds; Palestinian / Arab camps with appropriate food and music were also represented.

The climatic conditions of the desert are harsh. The temperatures were up to 38 degrees Celsius, with extremely dry air, so precautions against sunstroke and heat stroke had to be taken. Dusty wind required goggles. There was nothing to buy on the entire site (with the exception of ice cubes).

With the increasing popularity of Burning Man , similar events (" regionals ") took place in numerous countries on all continents , organized in the Burning Man Regional Network . The Midburn was the only Burning Man event in the Middle East. In a global comparison, the AfrikaBurn in South Africa and the Original in Nevada are even bigger with around 70,000 participants.

The ten principles

The founder of the American Burning Man, Larry Haryey, formulated the "Ten Principals" (Ten Principles) in 2004 as guidelines for the worldwide offshoot of Burning Man. They should not be understood as a dictation, but as a stimulus for the culture of the regionals worldwide:

  1. Radical inclusion : everyone can participate without exception.
  2. Gifting : giving out of joy and without expectations.
  3. Decommodification : no commerce, no advertising.
  4. Radical self-reliance : discover your own possibilities and trust in them.
  5. Radical self-expression : every individual should live out their uniqueness without fear.
  6. Communal Effort : creative cooperation and mutual support should lead to a community effort .
  7. Civic Responsibility : Taking responsibility for one's own actions and for the community.
  8. Leaving No Trace : after the end of the festival, no traces should be left in the desert.
  9. Participation : taking part instead of watching.
  10. Immediacy : Having immediate experiences.
