The Erlöserkirche in the Hessian capital Wiesbaden is a church building of the Evangelical Church of Hesse and Nassau , which was built in 1995 in the local district of Dotzheim- Sauerland. The catchment area of the municipality is mostly in the Wiesbaden district of Dotzheim, and to a lesser extent in Wiesbaden-Biebrichs .

history

History of the community

The history of the Evangelical Redeemer Congregation begins in 1969, when it was founded as a branch congregation of the Dotzheimer Church . A wooden chapel on Erich-Ollenhauer-Straße served the community as the church building. In 1976 the parish was recognized by the church administration in Darmstadt as an independent Evangelical parish of Wiesbaden-Sauerland ; the joint church council with the now former mother community of Dotzheim was dissolved.

Building history of the church

From the beginning, the congregation had the idea of moving from the provisionally occupied wooden chapel into a new church building of their own. These ideas were supported by the decision of the Wiesbaden magistrate to create a new residential area for 4000 people with the Neu-Sauerland settlement . After long negotiations, a new church was finally incorporated into the space requirements plan. The building site for the church and the new community center, which was then allocated to the parish, was located on an area called 'In den Zehn Morgen'; this name refers to an area on which the so-called tithe for the landlord was previously grown. Today, the ensemble is in a representative location on the so-called market square in the Sauerland district, which also houses the Sauerland elementary school and the municipal kindergarten .

Hügemeier und Thrun emerged as the winner in an architectural competition advertised in 1992. The architect Wolfgang Thrun took over the construction management . The building permit for the new church building was granted in May 1995, and the foundation stone was laid in December 1995 . In May 1997 the parish moved into the completed new building.

architecture

The church building including the community center is made of concrete , whereby the appearance of the community center is mainly determined by complete glazing on the visible side of the building.

Exterior

Interior view of the Church of the Redeemer

The community center and the church building are of a very heterogeneous character: the community center is fully glazed, the church building, apart from a concealed narrow row of windows and skylights, has no windows. With this, the architect wanted to express the transparency and concentration that corresponds to the various tasks of a modern church community: on the one hand, the diaconal task for society, on the other hand, church life, worship and prayer in an undisturbed environment.

Interior

The community center and the church building, formally strictly separated from the outside, flow into one another inside the components. The parish center and the church can be separated from each other in different levels by completely retractable wall segments. The functional rooms (parish office, kitchen, toilets, storage and youth room) form individual units that can be reached from the community center.

The furniture in the rather sober church interior was made entirely of wood. Altar , baptismal font and cross are composed of wooden elements that were roughly cut with a saw and then smoothed and oiled by hand.

organ

Organ by Matthias Breuning

The organ was built by the organ builder Matthias Breuning as part of his master's examination and expanded it in 2001 to include a free pedal and a pedal coupler. The organ builders Stephan Heberlein and Siegfried Jehmlich took care of the intonation . The organist of the Evangelical Paul Gerhardt Congregation Wiesbaden-Kohlheck, Helmut Asmis († 2019), provided further information on the design of the organ.

The instrument has eight registers with a total of 357 pipes , 276 of which are made of a tin - lead alloy and 81 of wood. The largest pipe is 2 12 meters long, while the smallest without its pipe base is only about 8 millimeters. The single-manual organ has a register division between b and c 1 , which considerably expands the sound possibilities. Two aliquot registers are only in high position. The registers contracture of the manual work carried out via register trains and in the pedal (coupling and Subbass ) over foot.

A mid-tone tuning was set in which many pure thirds are available. This makes the organ suitable for the presentation of works from the Renaissance and Baroque periods and occupies a special position in the Wiesbaden dean's office.

The disposition is as follows:

I Manual C – f 3
Covered B / D 8th'
Principal B / D 4 ′
Reed flute B / D 4 ′
Fifth D. 2 23
Octav B / D 2 ′
