Map of the Middle Windmill Islands with the Midgley Reefs (left) |
The Midgley reefs are some exposed at low tide cliff rocks and underwater reefs off the Budd Coast of the East Antarctic Wilke country . In the archipelago of the Windmill Islands , they lie off the west side of Midgley Island .
A crew from Wilkes Station discovered it on a boat trip in 1961. The Antarctic Names Committee of Australia named it after the island of the same name. Its namesake is Elwin Wilmer Midgley (1921–1984) of the United States Army Medical Corps , who helped the teams of the US Operation Windmill (1947–1948) to set up astronomical observation stations between the coast of Kaiser Wilhelm II. Land and assisted the Budd Coast.
