Midnight Ravers (dt .: midnight moth ) is a song of Bob Marley and his band The Wailers . It was releasedas the last of nine songson the studio album Catch a Fire ( 1973 ).

Emergence

Midnight Ravers was composed by Marley in Kingston in 1972 . Marley had a one night stand with Patricia Williams, which later became his son Robert Nesta Marley II. The morning after the affair, Marley wrote the lyrics of the song on the back of a Kingston phone book. The song was an integral part of the concerts on the 1973 and 1975 tours .

Music and lyrics

The piece starts with the reggae groove typical of The Wailers and after a short introduction the vocals begin. The peculiarity in comparison to the other tracks on the album is that the song does not follow the classic stanza-chorus sequence, but consists of two similar parts. The music of both parts is largely the same.

The song describes a seemingly surreal journey into the nightmare of the past few days, from which the protagonist tries to free himself. The use of the term ravers is a nod to the party culture of the 1960s and early 1970s. While in the first part of the song everything is sung from the we-perspective, the text changes to the first-person perspective in the second part. The protagonist asks for help to escape from the scene. The text contains a reference to the Old Testament with the phrase 10,000 chariots and is intended to refer to the deep religiosity of Marley and its roots in Rastafarianism .
