Miguel Ángel Sandoval

Miguel Ángel Sandoval (born September 7, 1949 in Guatemala City ) is a sociologist and human rights activist in Guatemala . He completed his sociology studies in Paris in 1979 .

Political activities

In 1970, Miguel Ángel Sandoval was a co-founder of the Guatemalan " Guerrilla Army of the Poor" (EGP - Ejército Guerrillero de los Pobres), one of four organizations of the National Revolutionary Unity of Guatemala ( Spanish : Unidad Revolucionaria Nacional Guatemalteca, URNG-MARÍNG for short ).

In 1987 he took part for six months as a member of the political-diplomatic commission of the URNG for the conclusion of a peace agreement with the government.

In 1997 he resigned from the URNG, which had been converted into a party, because he belonged to a minority wing that focused on strengthening social movements. Since February 1997 he has appeared as a columnist for the newspaper / magazine elPeriódico.

Sandoval has served as an advisor to the United Nations Development Program (PNUD), the European Union, and the Guatemalan Congress Legislation Modernization Program for the University of Austin, Texas. He was a social activist and advisor to the Agricultural Platform of Guatemala, founder of Mesa Global and a member of the Center for Legal Proceedings in Human Rights Issues (CALDH - Centro de Acción Legal en Derechos Humanos).

In the 2007 election year, Ángel Sandoval was a candidate for URNG-MAÍZ in the presidential elections on September 9, in which 2.14 percent of the vote went to him and Álvaro Colom was elected with 28.23 percent of the vote.
