It has an area of about 630 km², which corresponds to a length of about 42 km and a width of about 15 km. The highest point on the island is 240.79 m . Mikhaylow Island is located about 10 km south-southwest of Leskov Island .
The island was discovered in 1956 during a Soviet Antarctic expedition. The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names translated the Russian designation into English in 1965.
