The Leopold-und-Astrid-Coast ( Norwegian Leopold og Astrid Kyst ) is a stretch of coast of the East Antarctic Princess Elisabeth Land . It lies between the western end of the West Ice Shelf and Cape Penck . The Ingrid Christensen Coast connects to the west and the Kaiser Wilhelm II coast to the east .
The Norwegian pilot Alf Gunnestad (1904–1987) discovered and explored them on January 17, 1934 during an overflight as part of the third Antarctic voyage financed by the Norwegian whaling entrepreneur Lars Christensen with the ship Thorshavn (1933–1934) under captain Nils Larsen (1900–1976 ). Christensen named the coast after the Belgian King Leopold III. (1901–1983) and his first wife Astrid (1905–1935).
