The Banchō Seisaku Kenkyūjo ( Japanese. 番 町 政策 研究所 dt. "Banchō Political Research Institute ", abbreviated 番 町 研 , Banchō-Ken ) was a faction within the Japanese Liberal Democratic Party (LDP). It was renamed several times from 1956, shortly after the party was founded , until 2017, when it was absorbed into the Asō faction ( Shikōkai ).

Most recently, the faction was chaired by Akiko Santō from 2015 , which is why it was usually referred to as the Santō faction ( 山東 派 , Santō-ha ). Santō was the first woman to head an LDP faction. Earlier names were Miki-Matsumura faction, then Miki, Kōmoto, Kōmura - and finally Ōshima faction.

The Banchō Seisaku Kenkyūjo developed from the faction of Miki Takeo , the Seisaku Kondankai ( 政策 懇談 会 , German "Politics Discussion Council"), which was then chaired from 1980 to 1995 by Kōmoto Toshio Shin Seisaku Kenkyūkai ( 新 政策 研究 会 , German "Research Council for New Politics") was called. The faction initially united former members of two centrist parties of the post-war period, the Kokumin-kyōdō-tō ("People's Cooperation Party") and the Kaishintō ("Progressive Party"), and thus belongs to the so-called "conservative tributary" ( hoshu bōryū ; politician around Hatoyama Ichirō mainly from the Democratic Party of Japan, in contrast to the “mainstream conservative current”, hoshu honryū , around Yoshida Shigeru ) of the LDP.
