Mikołaj Górecki

Mikołaj Górecki (born February 1, 1971 in Katowice ) is a Polish composer. He is the son of Henryk Mikołaj Górecki .

Life

At the age of six he began his musical training on the violin, followed by piano lessons a year later. After graduating from the Katowice State Music School (Państwowe Liceum Muzyczne w Katowicach) in the piano class in 1990, he began studying composition at the music academy there with his father Henryk Mikołaj Górecki , which he finished in 1995 with "distinction". In 1996 and 1997, he received two grants from The Banff Center for the Arts in Canada , where he perfected his compositional craft. In 2000 he received his PhD in composition from Indiana University , Bloomington , USA. From 2000 to 2001 he taught at McGill University in Montreal. Górecki lives and works in the USA.

  • 1988: 1st prize at the 1st composition competition for young composers in Bielsko-Biała for Preludes for piano
  • 1994: 3rd prize 'Kapituły Krytyków' at the 2nd Forum of Young Composers in Krakow for the sonata for clarinet and piano (1993–1994).
