Mikołaj Sęp Szarzyński

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mikołaj Sęp Szarzyński (* around 1550 in Zimna Woda , † 1581 probably in Wolica ) was a Polish poet of the late Renaissance.

Little is known about Sęp's living conditions. He was the son of Joachim Sęp , the Podstoli von Lemberg and studied in Wittenberg and Leipzig, where he was sure to come into contact with the emerging Protestantism. Most of his works have probably been lost. Only a narrow volume under the title Rytmy albo Wiersze polskie , published by his son Jakub in 1601, has survived. It contains sonnets, hymns, psalm paraphrases as well as epitaphs and epigrams in Latin and Polish. It stands in the literary tradition of the Renaissance, but already shows mannerist tendencies.
