A Mikrofichekatalog (or micro catalog ) is a library catalog selected from postcard-size microfiches consists, on which the track record of the catalog are displayed. The images are extremely scaled down and cannot be read with the naked eye. The microfiche catalog has been replaced by electronic catalogs and is only used occasionally.

Microfiches are prepared by means of the COM method ( Computer Output on Microfilm ) to DIN A6 large sheet film sheets that stored in appropriate containers and be read with its own reading devices. An alternative to the COM method (in which the recordings of titles stored in the computer are mapped onto microfiches) is the reproduction of photographs from a tape or card catalog on microfiche. Microfiches have a header on which the content of the microfiche can be read with the naked eye and several hundred smaller, column-wise image fields that depict around 2000 to 6000 title recordings. An index field at the beginning or end of the microfiche makes it easier to find the catalog entry you are looking for.

The advantage of the microfiche catalog over older types of catalogs was that it could be produced quickly, cheaply and in any number of copies, and that it took up little space. However, since new titles could not be added, updated new editions had to be produced more often in order to keep the catalog up to date. The microfiche catalog has been almost completely replaced by new online catalogs.
