A microphone stand is a free-standing holder made of metal tubes for a microphone . It allows the microphone to be placed on stage or elsewhere without having to hold it by hand.

The classic shape of the microphone stand is the one standing upright on a dome-shaped base made of cast metal. Two or more telescopic tubes that fit into one another are screwed onto it, the height of which can be easily adjusted using a one-hand compression fitting. A common modern version of the base instead of the round metal arch of the upright stand is the foldable tripod. This variant makes it easier to transport and reduces the weight of the tripod, but requires more space and therefore poses a certain risk of stumbling.

For the miking of guitar amps has smaller models of desks and tables are goosenecks used. The latter can also be used to end a larger tripod in order to position the microphone closer to the sound source (e.g. speaker or singer). Usually, however, a swivel arm that can be adjusted in all directions is used here. Microphone stands are usually made of shiny chrome-plated or matt black scratch-resistant materials.

The microphone is screwed to the tripod, detachably clamped in a bracket screwed on at the top or attached with a microphone spider. The following threads are common for screwing the bracket to the tripod :

Microphone stands are also used to attach mobile audio recorders for recordings or field recording .
