Microplicae

In microplicae (Greco-Latin for "little wrinkles") is narrow folds of the cell membrane , either at the apical pole or laterally between epithelial cells are found. Like microvilli, microplicae can serve to increase the surface area of ​​the cell membrane. The lateral microplicae can form teeth with the neighboring epithelial cell.

Microplicae are found, for example, on the surface of vocal folds or between epithelial cells of the renal tubules .
