The Lodrino military airfield ( ICAO code LSML ) is a military airfield of the Swiss Air Force . It is part of the Locarno airfield command and is located at Lodrino TI .

history

The army made a runway in 1941. The airfield was then used in the post-war period as a jet airfield for de Havilland DH.100 Vampire , de Havilland DH.112 Venom and Hawker Hunter as well as for various liaison aircraft of the Swiss Air Force.

The A2 motorway was built in such a way that it can also be used as a runway. This was also practiced in 1991 in an exercise with the aircraft types mentioned above.

Todays use

The airfield in Lodrino is no longer operated directly by the Air Force, all flight operations in Ticino take place from the base in Locarno. RUAG Aviation runs the Center for Propeller Aircraft and UAV Systems there and maintains the Pilatus PC-6 , PC-7 and PC-9 systems of the Swiss Air Force. For the Air Force, this airfield only serves as an alternate airfield from Locarno for their planes and helicopters. There are only training flights for the parachute scouts, which are dropped off by the PC-6 Turbo Porter over Lodrino and from there are brought back to the jump height, as well as the work flight of the Air Force. The airfield is normally only approved for military aircraft; civilian air traffic is only permitted in the case of maintenance. The facility of the tower was completely dismantled in 2010.
