The Vibo Valentia military airfield is located in the southern Italian region of Calabria , around six kilometers southwest of Vibo Valentia . The airfield was opened in 1940 and during the Second World War it was mostly used as a stopover for flights between mainland Italy, Sicily and North Africa, as well as for maintenance and training purposes. In July 1943 it was largely destroyed by Allied bombers and then abandoned. In the post-war period it was taken over by the Carabinieri , who partly built over the airfield with barracks and converted the rest into a larger helipad .

In 1991, the Carabinieri presented on the airfield a airmobile Hunters unit on (Squadrone carabinieri eliportato cacciatori "Calabria") , which in the rugged mountain areas of Calabria against the 'Ndrangheta is used. The 14th Carabinieri Battalion Calabria has also been stationed at the former airfield since 2017 .
