The shelter is located in the TÜPl Seetaler Alpe area and is surrounded by a mountain pine forest. A public access road leads from the Schmelz to a car park around five minutes' walk below the hut. To the west of the house is the Speikkogel ( 1927  m ), which is connected to the Kreiskogel ( 2306  m ), a popular hiking destination, via a saddle .

history

From around 1925 target exercises were held in the area around Winterleiten until a regular military training area was established 10 years later . Under Chairman Lorenz Unterberger bought the nature lovers - local group Judenburg 1924 Grubhofer hut on the Great (upper) Winterleitensee and converted them consuming. After only seven years, this first Winterleiten hut fell victim to a fire. The very next day work began on a new building on the Kleiner Winterleitensee, which was opened in July 1932. As a result of the forced dissolution of the Friends of Nature, the hut was officially closed in February 1933 and a year later transferred to the "completely non-political" ÖTK . After the National Socialists came to power , the German Youth Hostel Association took over the hut. After the end of World War II , confiscation by the British occupation was prevented. The right of ownership was then considered to be "unresolved" until the hut was returned to nature lovers in 1950. A material ropeway to the Schmelz that was built in 1941 ceased operations in 1954. In spring 1976 the hut at the new location was also destroyed by a smoldering fire. The new building, opened in 1978, has a capacity of 27 beds, which was expanded in 1991 to include a 10-person warehouse.
