The Kreiskogel is 2306  m above sea level. A. high mountain in the Seetal Alps in the Austrian state of Styria . In connection with the Zirbitzkogel , it forms a popular tour destination over the Winterleitenseen.

Location and surroundings

The Kreiskogel is located on the main ridge of the Seetal Alps about 2800 m north of the Zirbitzkogel on the TÜPl Seetaler Alpe. The border between the districts of Murau ( Neumarkt municipality ) and Murtal ( Judenburg municipality ) runs over the summit . A nameless notch separates it from the Ochsenbodenhöhe ( 2292  m ) in the south, with which it borders the largest cirque of the mountain group to the northwest. In addition to the two Winterleitensee lakes, there are the much smaller Ochsenbodenseen. The ridge continues to the north to the Wenzelalpe ( 2151  m ). In the transition to Ochsenbodenhöhe, a Marterl from 1998 reminds of an avalanche victim . The base for an ascent is the Winterleitenhütte ( 1782  m ) east of the mountain.

Geology and geomorphology

The circle is made Kogel typical of the Seetal Alps garnet mica schist built. On the ridge to Ochsenbodenhöhe there are several pegmatite lenses and narrow layers of amphibolites . At the Kreiskogel there is a 35 ° NWN fall of the layers. A marble lens is turned on in the lower section of the eastern flank .

While three sides of the mountain fall as steep grassy slopes, the east flank and the summit area are interspersed with rocks. The small cirque south of the mountain is characterized by sliding block debris from Kreiskogel and Ochsenbodenhöhe and is home to three lakes.

Ascent

Lukas Max via ferrata

The Kreiskogel is often climbed starting from the Winterleitenhütte and in combination with the Zirbitzkogel . From the hut, the ascent takes about 1½ hours along yellow signposts (TÜPl) over the northeast ridge. The further way to the Zirbitzkogel also takes 1½ hours. For the commission of the debris-covered south-west slope is surefootedness required.

Since autumn 2004 it has also been possible to climb the Kreiskogel via the Lukas Max via ferrata. The sport via ferrata runs over 300 m through the rocky eastern flank of the mountain and is maintained by the Austrian Armed Forces . A total of 90 anchors , 160 rope clamps and 350 m steel rope were installed in a construction period of several weeks . The climb, which is named after the son of its builder, has a difficulty of D / E ( extremely difficult ) and should only be climbed by reasonably experienced mountaineers with a via ferrata set . Due to the grassy terrain, there are some walking passages. In addition, the path can be left in several places. From the Winterleitenhütte you need about ½ hour to get in, the climbing time is 1½ hours.

In the winter half of the year, the Kreiskogel is a popular destination for ski tours , with people like to climb over the southeast ridge.
