The Mill Springs Battlefield National Monument is an American national monument in Pulaski County and Wayne Counties , Kentucky . The monument consists of three separate areas. It was on March 12, 2019 signing of the Congress-law John D. Dingell, Jr. Conservation, Management, and Recreation Act by President Donald Trump reported. The National Monument was designated to commemorate the Battle of Mill Springs in the American Civil War . Mill Springs marked the United States Army's first major victory in the Civil War . It proved crucial to the Union's control over Kentucky and the surrounding states. The National Park Service oversees the Camp Nelson Heritage National Monument .

Various parts of the monument had long been listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). In April 1994, the battlefield was designated a National Historic Landmark District (NHLD).

The Mill Springs National Cemetery , part of the United States National Cemetery system , is close. After the battle, the first soldiers were buried here.
