The minaret from the north

The Islam Khodja minaret is the tallest minaret in Ichan Qalʼа , the historic old town of Chiwas , a UNESCO World Heritage site . It was built in the early 20th century together with the Islam Khodja madrasah .

Building

The Islam Khodja minaret is located in the south-east of the old town directly in front of the south wing of the Islam Khodja madrasah and forms a structural ensemble with it . Both were built in honor of Said Islam Khodja , an important dignitary under Khan Said Muhammad Rahim II ( reigned 1863 to 1910) and vizier or first minister under Khan Esfendijar ( reigned 1910 to 1920).

The Islam Khodja minaret is 45 meters high and is the highest chiwas. The platform is open to the public. This means that the tower that can be walked on is also the highest view over the panorama of the world heritage site. The minaret is horizontally divided into zones with blue, white and green ceramic tiles , which are designed in ribbons . The lantern has a stalactite- shaped cornice ( muqarnas ) and ceramic grating of the Pandjara type . In contrast to the other large ones in the old town, such as Kalta Minor or the minaret of the Dschuma Mosque, the minaret is not in an east-west axis, the so-called sun line. To the west is a building attached to the minaret.
