The Minato Bridge ( Japanese 港 大橋 , Minato Ōhashi ) is a 983 m long two-story truss bridge in the port of Osaka . The bridge, opened in July 1974, is the cantilever bridge with the third largest span in the world.
The bridge is used by the Hanshin Highway No. 4 Wangan-sen , with the lower deck not being put into operation until 1991. The structure consists of two symmetrical cantilever girders , which are connected with a 196 meter long suspension girder . The span is 510 m and is only exceeded by the Forth Bridge (521 m) and the Québec Bridge (549 m).
The construction of a cantilever bridge was chosen because of the poor subsoil and the better behavior in earthquakes and wind compared to suspension or arch bridges . The structure built by Kawasaki Heavy Industries should be as light as possible, which is why it is made of weldable high-strength steel that was specially manufactured for the application. The 4200-ton suspension bracket was delivered on the water and lifted into the assembly position in just three and a half hours.
