The Mingzhou Bridge ( Chinese 明州 大桥 ) is an eight-lane road bridge in Ningbo , Zhejiang Province , China , where it leads the highway-like East Ring Road North over the Yongjiang. It stands over a bend in the river, which has heavy shipping traffic, and therefore crosses it without piers in the river bed. Construction began in February 2008 and opened to traffic in May 2011.
It is one of the ten largest arch bridges in the world.
The structure is 1250 m long including the access ramps. The 650 m long steel bridge has two arches made of welded box girders with a span of 450 m. The arches are inclined to one another in relation to the vertical, so that their distance at the apex is significantly smaller than at the abutments . The arches are connected and stiffened by nine cross beams, also designed as hollow boxes. The carriageway girder , which is designed as a tie , extends over the entire length of 650 m and is 45.80 m wide, is suspended from the arches with wire ropes.
The arch halves were erected in a cantilever with auxiliary anchoring on high steel pillars standing on the abutments.
