The Minorite Monastery in Ratingen was a convent of the Franciscan Minorites in Ratingen ( Mettmann district ), which existed from 1656 to around 1834.

The monastery buildings that have survived to this day are still referred to as Minorite monasteries.

The monastery had an average of 13 monks. The order finances by helping relatives in aristocratic chapels and parishes, by donations and from 1767 by running a Latin school.

History of the monastery

Efforts to establish a Minorite monastery in Ratingen have been documented since 1651. Official approval was given in the same year.

In 1655 the foundation stone for the Ratingen Minorite Monastery was laid in the city center in the immediate vicinity of the parish church of St. Peter and Paul, which was occupied on April 4, 1656.

From 1659 to 1677 a monastery church was built, which could not be consecrated until 1725.

From 1678 to 1691 the monastery was expanded by two wings.

From 1767 until the dissolution of the monastery there was also a Latin school in the convent building.

As a result of secularization and for financial reasons, the monastery was transferred to state property in 1803 and continued with its support. However, the financing was still critical, the order members gradually died, the last in 1843.

Later use

In 1834 the former monastery buildings were donated to the city, which set up a school in them.

In 1884 the facade to Lintorfer Strasse was redesigned and converted into a town hall , which was located there until the new town hall building was completed in 1973.

As a result of the new building, the south-western side of the monastery was largely built up so that the monastery building was barely visible from the surrounding streets. It was only exposed again as part of the demolition of the town hall in 2015/2016.

From 1975 to 1977 the buildings were converted to house the adult education center, which, together with a cinema with two halls, is still in the building today.

Since 2019, the building has also been home to rooms and outdoor areas for civil weddings .
