Mira Calix

Mira Calix is the pseudonym of the South African musician and record producer Chantal Passamonte (* 1969 in Durban , South Africa ). Her music belongs to the experimental electronica genre and is released by the British label Warp Records .

Life

Born in Durban, South Africa, Passamonte trained as a photographer and moved to the United Kingdom in 1991. There she worked first at the London record store Ambient Soho and later as press spokesman for the Sheffield music label Warp Records. Together with her flatmate Strictly Kev ( DJ Food ) she organized various parties. While working at Warp Records, she acquired her first music production hardware. In 1996 the EP Ilanga was released as the first production under the pseudonym Mira Calix , which was best known for the A-side piece Humba . Towards the end of 1997 she increasingly turned to music production.

In 1999 her debut album One On One was released . The second album Skimskitta was released in 2003 on Warp Records. In the same year Mira Calix recorded her piece Nunu together with the London Sinfonietta in the London Royal Festival Hall . The recording was published in 2004 on the EP 3 Commissions .

The third solo album Eyes Set Against The Sun was released in 2006. In the same year the EP Push Door To Exit was the first release of the Alexander's Annexe project , for which Mira Calix collaborated with the musicians Sarah Nicolls and David Sheppard. Her fourth solo album The Elephant In The Room: 3 Commissions was released in 2008. In the following year, Mira Calix set one of eight of Shakespeare's 154 Sonnets to music as part of the project Nothing Like the Sun by composer Gavin Bryars .

In autumn 2009 she won the British Composer Award and the Royal Philharmonic Society Award for the piece My Secret Heart . The piece is part of an installation of the homeless project Streetwise Opera and was created in collaboration with the video artist Flat-E . My Secret Heart was toured internationally in 2009 and 2010 at various events such as the Edinburgh International Film Festival or SuperDeluxe Tokyo . In total, the project reached 150,000 viewers.

The cliffordandcalix project emerged from the collaboration with the Seefeel musician Mark Clifford . In 2010 Aperture released the album Lost Foundling 1999-2004 and the Lost Foundling Remix EP .

Passamonte is married to Autechre musician Sean Booth and lives in Saxmundham , Suffolk .
