The Mirounga Flats are a tidal , muddy plain located in Borge Bay to the northwest of Signy Island in the South Orkney Archipelago . While it is bounded by the Signy Island coastline to the north and west, the Thule Islands are its limit to the east .

Scientists from the British Discovery Investigations carried out rough surveys in 1933. Employees of the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey specified this in 1947 and also named the level. It is named after the southern elephant seals ( Mirounga leonina ), which visit this level when they are changing their fur.
