The Thule Islands are a group of small islands in the archipelago of the South Orkney Islands . They are located 400 m southwest of Balin Point in the northwest part of Borge Bay of Signy Island .
The group had been known as Thule Rocks since at least 1916 . After measurements by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey in 1947, the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee made an adjustment to the name in 1959. It is named after the Norwegian whaling ship Thule , which operated as a factory ship in the waters around the Southern Orkney Islands in two campaigns between 1912 and 1914 .
