The station is located at the intersection of the 5th , 6th and 14th arrondissements of Paris. It is below street level between the southern end of Boulevard Saint-Michel and the western end of Boulevard de Port-Royal. The tracks and platforms are partially covered under streets, especially the Boulevard Saint-Michel.

Surname

The station owes its name to the Boulevard de Port-Royal that begins there. This in turn is named after the former women's monastery Port-Royal de Paris , which belonged to the Cistercian monastery Port Royal des Champs in Magny-les-Hameaux southwest of Versailles .

History and description

RATP train formed from class Z 23000 railcars at Port-Royal station, 1966

The Ligne de Sceaux , a suburban railway opened on June 7, 1846 from Paris-D'Enfer (today: Denfert-Rochereau ) station to Sceaux , was built in 1895 by the then operating company Compagnie du chemin de fer de Paris à Orléans ( PO) extended largely underground towards the city center. The steam locomotives used were equipped with a condensation device in order to reduce the air pollution caused by them in the tunnel area.

The Port-Royal station was built between Denfert-Rochereau and the new Luxembourg terminus . In order to provide “fresh air” to the steam locomotives that were “tortured” by the condensation system, part of the station was not capped. The station building was erected across the tracks for reasons of space; it has been preserved in its original state. There are two roofed, meanwhile extended side platforms on the two main tracks.

Of remembrance for the victims of the attack - the station signs bearing the logo of the RATP

In 1937/38, the Ligne de Sceaux was electrified with 1500  volts DC by means of an overhead line. The new operator was the Compagnie du chemin de fer métropolitain de Paris (CMP), which was incorporated into the RATP in 1948 . From 1934 onwards, CMP ordered class Z 23000 railcars especially for the route, several series of which were delivered up to 1962. They were used in multiple traction without a sidecar .

In 1977 the route became part of the Réseau express régional (RER) as line B. Two- system multiple units of the MI 79 and MI 84 series are currently operating there .

On December 3, 1996, four people were killed and 170 others were injured in a bomb attack in Port-Royal train station.
