Misenos

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Misenos ( old Greek: Μισηνός, Latin: Misenus) is a figure in Greek mythology . He was first the trumpeter of Hector , after his death he became the companion of Aeneas .

Together with Aeneas Misenus came to Italy, where he drew the wrath of Triton by playing on his instrument, a snail trumpet . The angry sea god drowned him without further ado, whereupon Aeneas had the body buried on a promontory, which was named after him Misenum .

A tradition quoted by Strabo names Misenos as a companion of Odysseus , who died in an accident on the coast of Campania .
