Mithridates III. (Pontus)

Tetradrachm Mithridates' III.

Mithridates III. was the fourth king of Pontus and ruled from about 220 to about 185 BC. Chr.

The rule of Mithridates III, not mentioned in the classical literary sources. was deduced from a comment by the biographer Plutarch and the historian Appian about the number of Pontic kings. The reign is only passed down through coins. There are scientists who suspect that he was identical to Mithridates II (Pontus) . However, this would have made the reign of the second Mithridates extraordinarily long.

Mithridates III. was the first king of Pontus to have coins minted with his portrait. It is not certain whether he or the previous king Mithridates II made a futile attempt to capture Sinope (220 BC).
