Mediterranean disease
In colloquial language typical diseases, especially those native to the Mediterranean region, are referred to as Mediterranean diseases.

The term "Mediterranean disease" does not make sense for two reasons. On the one hand, these diseases also occur in other subtropical and tropical areas, which is why the term " travel sickness " is used more often in veterinary medicine . On the other hand, some of these diseases are now also native to Central Europe .
The term "Mediterranean disease" is less common in humans. It could mean one of the following diseases:
- Thalassemia (Mediterranean anemia)
- Leishmaniasis
- Brucellosis (Mediterranean fever, Malta fever)
- familial Mediterranean fever or
- Boutonneuse fever (Mediterranean spotted fever )
The term Morbus mediterraneum (Latin for "Mediterranean disease ") is also used jokingly for "lamentation without medical reason".
