The 1996 Super Touring Car Cup was the third season of this racing series.
Season overview
The 1996 season was dominated by the Italian Audi factory driver Emanuele Pirro , who won the most races that season. The British runner-up Steve Soper was the only other driver who drove for the title. But a bad start to the season hampered his title ambitions and Pirro was early champion in the penultimate race on the Avus . Laurent Aïello was third in a Peugeot in the first STW season for Aiello and Peugeot. The Frenchman was able to win a few races, but was too inconsistent to get beyond third place in the championship. Christian Abt surprisingly came fourth in a private Audi without factory support in front of three factory Audis.
