Feeding picture

description

Adult beetles are 1.6 to 2.5 millimeters in size. In its appearance, the species is very similar to the other European species of the genus Pityokteines and is difficult to distinguish from them.

distribution

The species is found from the Pyrenees to the Caucasus . It occurs in fir forests.

Way of life

The species colonizes branches and trunk parts 1 to 16 centimeters thick in the upper crown area, which are thin and smooth bark. In young trees, it also attacks the trunk. 2 generations are formed per year.

Reproduction

The large ramming chamber digs the sapwood . From this ramming chamber 3 to 9 radially arranged, around 5 centimeters long mother tunnels extend. These mother ducts run transversely and usually cut deeply into the sapwood. Larval ducts, which are 3 to 4 centimeters long and mostly run lengthways, are gnawed from the large niches. The doll's cradles are usually laid out in sapwood.

Systematics

The mean pine bark beetle is considered to be a sister species of the crooked pine bark beetle ( Pityokteines curvidens ).
