Moʻynoq ( Uzbek Moʻynoq or in Cyrillic script Мўйно Schrift ; Karakalpakisch Moynaq or Мойнақ ; Russian Муйнак Muinak ) is a city in western Uzbekistan in the autonomous republic of Karakalpakistan . The former port city was on a peninsula at the southern end of the Aral Sea until the second half of the 20th century . Today the shore is about 80 kilometers away. The city is now on the southern edge of the Aralkum Desert . Moʻynoq is the capital of the district of the same name Moʻynoq .

Mo'ynoq, a former settlement, received city status in 1963 during the Soviet era. At that time it was known for fishing, the main employers were a fish canning company and the fishing fleet. The industry had to give up because of the dramatic drop in the water level. After the city gave up fishing, most of the population emigrated. In 2018 around 13,500 people still lived here.
