Music On Console ( MOC ) is a free audio player for Unix / Linux based on the ncurses library. Its user interface is very similar to that of the Midnight Commander . It is extensively configurable and supports ALSA , OSS or JACK as a sound output. There are configurable color schemes, different layouts for the user interface. The key assignments can also be changed. The audio player supports ID3 tags . MOC has a playlist and a folder browser, and you can switch between them using the tab key . A start folder can be defined for the folder browser, the so-called "MusicDir". If desired, this will be loaded when starting the player.

Its text-based user interface is accordingly resource-efficient. It uses a client / server architecture similar to that of the Music Player Daemon . Closing the user interface normally only terminates the client, the server continues to run in the background. It is also possible to run several clients in parallel in this way, which can be useful when using virtual desktops, for example. Furthermore, the program supports the use of themes that are created as text files .

Four MOC clients with themes

Although MOC uses a client / server architecture similar to that of Music Player Daemon , MOC is not reachable over the network, nor does it have an open API for communicating with alternative clients. Nevertheless, it is possible to bring the client to another computer via the network, for example via SSH , and thus control the server.
