Modernization loser

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As losers of modernization , is called human groups in the modernization -conceived processes of social change their social or economic status lose all or part of. The social and economic decline of these groups is seen in the social sciences as a characteristic that creates identity and is seen there as a cause of withdrawal from society, rejection of the political system or a tendency towards violence and crime.

The term “modernization loser” was mainly coined by Wilhelm Heitmeyer and Wilfried Schubarth in connection with research on the political right-wing extremism of young people . The concept of accepting youth work is essentially based on the assumption that right-wing young people are to be counted among the “losers in modernization”.

history

Even the industrial revolution , regardless of its overall expansive effects on the people's wealth, had negative effects on numerous long-established trades (such as hand-weaving) and service industries . The approach of the machine storms ( Luddites ) and the explosive growth of anti-Semitism in the last third of the 19th century of the commercial middle class, which was confronted with overpowering competition from factories , department stores, etc., are typical forms of resentment among those who have lost out on modernization.

Today the term is widely used in the media. The dissatisfaction with democracy in many Western countries (see also disaffection with politics , disaffection with politicians ) is often attributed to the reactions of those who have lost out on modernization (older workers, “ victims of change ”, technological, social and political “victims of change” etc.).
