Modesto Lafuente y Zamalloa (born October 25, 1806 in Ravanal de los Caballeros , † 1866 in Madrid ) was a Spanish historian .

Life

Lafuente was first a professor and librarian in Astorga , moved to Madrid in 1838 and appeared here as a journalist and satirical moral teacher with the periodical works published under the pseudonyms Fray Gerundio and Tirabeque :

  • Coleccion de capilladas y disciplinarzos (16 volumes)
  • Viage por Francia, Belgica y Alemania (2 volumes)
  • Viage areostatico
  • Teatro social del siglo XIX (2 volumes)
  • Revista europea (4 volumes), all of which appeared between 1844 and 1850 and are widely used.

His main work, however, is the Historia general de España (Madrid 1850–1866, 30 volumes; continued by Juan Valera , Barcelona 1877–82, 6 volumes).

Lafuente was most recently director of the Escuela superior de diplomática and president of the Junta de los archivos y bibliotecas, and as deputy and vice-president of the Cortes was also distinguished by his speaking skills .
