Modic classification

The Modic classification is a radiological classification of changes in the area of ​​the vertebral bodies , namely bone marrow changes adjacent to the top and bottom plates. These were described in a 1988 issue of Radiology by Michael T. Modic , professor of radiology and neurology at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland . The classification has been named after him ever since.

  • Type I: bone marrow edema, hypointense in T1, hyperintense in T2
  • Type II: Replacement of blood-forming bone marrow with fat marrow, hyperintense in T1, iso- or slightly hyperintense in T2
  • Type III: sclerosis , hypointense in T1, hypointense in T2
