The Moerisiidae are a family of hydrozoa (Hydrozoa) from the tribe of the cnidarians (Cnidaria) that live exclusively in the sea . It is a smaller family with around 11 species in three genera .

features

The hydroid polyps have moniliform or slightly modified pearl-shaped tentacles, which are distributed or arranged in a wreath approximately in the middle of the hydrant body . The Medusa buds develop between or just below the tentacles. Polyp buds are formed in the lower part of the hydrant. The hydrocaulus is relatively short and ends in a foot disc that forms podocysts or in stolon-like tubes with podocysts at the ends. The stolons can also be connected to other hydrants. The medusa has a cuboid manubrium . This has radial lobes at the base into which the radial channels open. The mouth is simply cross-shaped. There is no stomach stalk. Centripetal channels may or may not be present. The gonads sit on the manubrium and on the lobes that surround the manubrium, or even just on the lobes that overlap the radial canals. The medusa has four to several hundred marginal, string-shaped (moniliform) or modified string-shaped tentacles with overgrown buds. Abaxial ocelli are present.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The family has so far been recorded almost worldwide with the exception of the Antarctic and the polar regions. The animals live in fresh, brackish and salt water.
