Mogulones geographicus , as Map Raublattrüssler known is a beetle from the family of weevils (Curculionidae).

features

Mogulones geographicus reaches a length of 4–5 mm. The wing covers of the light brown weevil have a pattern of fine pale lines.

Occurrence

The species occurs in the western Palearctic . It is widespread in Europe and is found in the British Isles (mainly in the south and east of England). Their distribution area extends to North Africa and the Middle East . The beetle species was deliberately introduced in Australia. There it is represented in Western and South Australia as well as in Victoria and New South Wales. The beetles are intended to curb the spread of the plantain-leaved adder's head ( Echium plantagineum ), a species of plant introduced into Australia which, if eaten heavily, leads to symptoms of poisoning in cattle.

Way of life

The species lives oligophagous in warm locations on the adder head species ( Echium ), especially on the common adder head ( Echium vulgare ). The beetles are particularly common in summer and early autumn. The eggs are laid in rosettes at the base of the plant stem and the hatching larvae then feed on the roots of their host plants.
