Lisandro C. Abadia

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lisandro C. Abadia (* 1938 ) is a former Filipino general who, among other things, was Commanding General of the Army in 1991 and Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines between 1991 and 1994 .

Life

Abadia began after attending the PMAA (Philippine Merchant Marine Academy) in 1958 an officer training at the military academy (Philippine Military Academy) , which he graduated in 1962. In the following years he found various uses as an officer in the Philippine Army and was, among other things, from May 28, 1975 to June 16, 1976 as a lieutenant colonel in command of the 14th Infantry Battalion. As a colonel and operations staff officer in the army, he played a key role in the EDSA revolution that led to the overthrow of Ferdinand Marcos on February 25, 1986 .

On January 11, 1991, he was appointed Major General of President Corazon Aquino to succeed Major General Guillermo G. Flores as Commanding General of the Philippine Army . However, he only held this post for three months until April 11, 1991, when he was replaced by Major General Arturo Enrile . Thereafter, President Aquino appointed him to succeed Lieutenant General Rodolfo Biazon as Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines . As a general, he was the highest officer in the armed forces. His appointment met with criticism from the generals, as 42 generals in the armed forces such as major generals Guillermo Flores and Alexander Aguirre had longer periods of service. During his tenure there was a fight against terrorism , particularly against the Islamist underground movement Abu Sajaf . He held the post of Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces until he retired on April 12, 1994 and was then replaced by Lieutenant General Arturo Enrile.

After retiring from active military service, he worked in business and was director of the philippine estates corp until December 14, 2011 . In the elections of May 11, 1998 Abadia ran for the LAKAS-National Union of Christian Democrats (LAKAS-NUCD) for one of the twelve seats to be awarded in the Senate of the Philippines . He received 5,426,378 votes, but as nineteenth out of 40 candidates, he clearly missed entry into the Senate. In January 2001, he was one of the signatories of an advertisement in which 60 former officers called for President Joseph Estrada to step down.

Abadia was brought before the special court (Sandiganbayan) in 2011 and 2014 . He was charged with illegally enriching himself by 11 million while serving as Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces .

His older brother Lieutenant General Loven C. Abadia was also a graduate of the military academy in 1960 and commanding general of the Air Force. His eldest brother Lino C. Abadia was also a graduate of the Philippine Military Academy, but was killed in a plane crash on December 3, 1957, one day after completing his training. He is involved in the Philippine Civic Action Group (PHILCAG).
