The black macaque ( Macaca maura ) is a species of primate from the genus of macaques within the family of the vervet monkeys (Cercopithecidae).
features
The fur of the black macaque is predominantly dark brown or dark gray in color, the rear area of the trunk can be light gray. Of other living on Sulawesi Makakenarten as the Celebes Crested Macaque , it differs by the absence of a hair tuft and display modest brick strips. The animals reach a head body length of 60 to 70 centimeters, the tail is only a short stub. Males can weigh up to 10 kilograms, while females are significantly lighter.
Distribution and way of life
Black macaques live exclusively on the southwestern peninsula of the island of Sulawesi (formerly Celebes), their habitat is predominantly tropical rainforests . They are diurnal and live both on the ground and in the trees. They form groups of 5 to 25 animals, which consist of several males and females as well as their offspring. Their diet consists of fruits (mostly figs), bamboo seeds, buds and small animals.
After a gestation period of around 160 to 186 days, the female usually gives birth to a single young. This is weaned after 6 to 12 months and sexually mature at 2 to 4 years. Life expectancy can be up to 28 years.
threat
They are endangered due to the ongoing destruction of their habitat in their already small area of distribution. It is estimated that there are only around 1000 of these animals left; the IUCN lists them as endangered .
