The Mohr Meise ( Melaniparus niger ; to Latin niger , black ') is a is a bird art from the family of tits (Paridae). When fully grown, this songbird is about 16 cm tall.
description
The birds have black dorsal plumage, the belly is grayish to black in color. The head, beak, and tail are also black. The legs are grayish. The lower part of the wings is white with black stripes. There are also completely black specimens depending on the distribution area. Males and females do not differ in the color of their plumage.
distribution and habitat
The black tit inhabits the forests, forest edges and sparse trees in southern Africa, north to Tanzania.
Way of life
They move through the woods in small groups in search of food. Their diet includes smaller insects as well as plant seeds and berries.
Reproduction
During the breeding season they form small breeding colonies. The female lays 3–4 eggs per brood. The incubation period is approx. 2 weeks, after which the young remain in the nest for up to 20 days. The young are mainly fed with insects. The young of the previous year also take part in the brood care.
Danger
Because of its widespread distribution and that no threats are known for this species, the IUCN classifies this species as ( Least Concern ) harmless.
