Moisés Avelino

Moisés Nogueira Avelino (born May 20, 1940 in Santa Filomena , Piauí ) is a Brazilian doctor, businessman and politician. He was the second governor of Tocantins State .

Life

Avelino was born as the son of Antônio Luiz Avelino and Zulmira Nogueira Avelino in the state of Piauí. His family had a long political tradition in the city of Santa Filomena, according to the regional electoral court of Piauí, his father was elected mayor of the municipality in 1950, 1962 and 1976.

Admitted to a public competition, Moisés Avelino became a criminal expert in Goiás in 1969 and received his doctorate in medicine from the Universidade Federal de Goiás (UFG) in 1973 . He worked in hospitals and emergency rooms in Goiânia until he settled in Paraíso do Tocantins , where he worked in hospital, agriculture and livestock business.

In 1981 he joined the Partido do Movimento Democrático Brasileiro (PMDB) and began his political career when he was first elected City Prefect (Mayor) of Paraíso do Tocantins for a term from February 1, 1983 to August 30, 1988 in 1982. Between 1985 and 1988 he also took on local political functions as president of the local authority association Associação dos Municípios do Vale do Araguaia e Tocantins (AMVAT) and the Cooperativa dos Produtores Rurais do Vale do Norte (COOPERNORTE).

The Brazilian constitution of 1988 carved out the new state of Tocantins from the state of Goiás and in 1988 Avelino was elected for the first time as federal representative for Tocantins in the Chamber of Deputies in Brasília for the legislative period from 1989 to 1991. In 1990 he was elected second governor of Tocantins to the governor's seat of Palácio Araguaia for the period from 1991 to 1995 with 175,166 votes , his predecessor and successor was governor Siqueira Campos .

In 1998 he ran again for gubernatorial election, losing to Siqueira Campos. In the same year, his son from his marriage to Virgínia Avelino, Igor Avelino , was elected a federal representative, he himself was only re-elected for the legislative period from 2007 to 2011 in the Chamber of Deputies of the National Congress. In the 2010 election he could not prevail. Instead, he re-entered local politics, was re-elected city prefect of Paraíso de Tocantins for the second time with around 29% of the vote from 2013 and with 49.01% of the votes for 2017 to 2020.

Avelino is an honorary citizen of the cities of Brasília, Goiânia and Paraíso de Tocantins and of the state of Piaui.
