Soccer
After winning the game in 1996 , Nigeria took part in the men's soccer tournament for the fourth time. Like five years earlier, the coach was Jo Bonfrere from the Netherlands . The team, whose players were mostly under contract with European clubs, started the tournament with a 3: 3 against Honduras, against Australia a 3: 2 win. In the last group game, a 1-1 draw against Italy was enough to move into the quarter-finals as second in the group. This was lost against Chile with 1: 4.
For the first time, Nigeria also took part in the women's soccer tournament. Against the three group opponents from China, Norway and the United States, the team trained by Mabo Ismaila lost 1: 3 each, so that the preliminary round ended with 0 points in last place.
