The Mokka-Milch-und-Eis-Bar , also called Mokka-Milch-Eisbar , was an ice cream parlor in Berlin's Karl-Marx-Allee .

History and architecture

The building is part of the second construction phase of Karl-Marx-Allee, which was rebuilt as Stalinallee and renamed in 1961. With this expansion from 1961 to 1964 under the overall artistic direction of Josef Kaiser , the avenue was extended from Berlin-Friedrichshain to the area of Berlin-Mitte . The mocha milk and ice bar was designed by Walter Franek as one of five analog pavilions. The flat-roofed hall buildings with an open gallery floor inside are clad with yellow ceramic tiles on the outside walls. The Kino International and the Café Moskau together with this distributed group of buildings form an ensemble integrated into the residential complex. This also included the Hotel Berolina until 1996 , after its demolition the very similar Rathaus Mitte was built in its place . The buildings were to set a new accent in socialist building culture , which was now more oriented towards international modern architecture and at the same time enabled considerably cheaper construction.

The Mokka-Milch-und-Eis-Bar - on the north side of the avenue with the postal address Karl-Marx-Allee 35 - became a popular meeting place for young people, especially from the 1980s, when discos were also held there, called “Mokke ". At the end of the 1960s she became known nationwide through a hit title by Thomas Natschinski . He and his group sang about the “Mokka-Milch-Eisbar” as a meeting place for young people. As a result, there were imitators with the same name in other cities.

After almost 30 years, the facility was closed during the fall of the Wall. From 1993 the building was used by the Alberts restaurant with the A-Lounge nightclub below . In 1995 the Eis-Hennig chain opened a new branch next door . In August 2019, the Alberts ceased operations as part of extensive road renovations.
