Mokohinau Islands

The Mokohinau Islands are a small group of islands off the northeast coast of the North Island of New Zealand .

The islands are 13 miles northwest of Great Barrier Island and approximately 32 miles east of Bream Head . Most of them are managed by the Department of Conservation as nature reserves and can only be entered with permission.

Large parts of Burgess Island, however, have been designated as Country Park by the Department of Conservation , which allows it to be used for recreational purposes. The rest of the island is land of the Crown and is administered by the Ministry of Transport.

Mokohinau Islands Lighthouse has been on Burgess Island since 1883 , one of New Zealand's lighthouses with the greatest distance to the main islands. The lighthouse has been fully automated since 1980.

The main group of islands consists of Burgess Island and numerous small islands, of which the larger Atihau Island and Hokoromea Island are. Fanal Island is about 6 km to the south-east , and small Groper Island is 7 km to the west .
