geography

The approximately 140  m high, approximately 400 m wide and approximately 480 m long cape is located around 8 km southeast of the entrance to Whāngārei Harbor and forms the extreme eastern point of a tongue of land up to 6 km wide, which faces Whangarei Harbor to the east concludes.

About 1.5 km to the north are the small islands of the Bream Islands and about 10 km to the south-east the Marotere Islands rise out of the sea with the Taranga Island to the south . Together, the islands are also known as Hen and Chickens Islands and are only separated from the mainland with Bream Head by the Parry Channel .

geology

Geologically, Bream Head is part of a mountain range that extends from the cape for a length of 5.2 km to the west and is 2.5 km at its widest point. The highest point is the remnant of an andesite volcano from the Miocene , which lies just over a kilometer west of the cape and rises 476  m above Bream Bay to the south . The volcanic activity in the area spanned a period of around 6 million years and dates back between 24 and 21 million years.

hike

Via the Te Whara Track , the mountain range can be hiked in an east-west direction with its highest elevation. The cape is not accessible above. The entire mountain range has been designated a Scenic Reserve by the Department of Conservation .
