Whey powder

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Whey powder (alternative spelling: whey powder ) is dried whey . It is a by-product of cheese production , which is obtained as sweet whey or sour whey , depending on the production process . Whey powder consists of 76% lactose (milk sugar) and 13% protein . As a cheap supplier of animal protein, it is often used in industrial food production, including for the production of apparently plant-based foods such as B. margarine . In addition, because of the properties mentioned, whey powder is used as feed in pig fattening and as a component of milk replacers in calf rearing .

After the Chernobyl nuclear catastrophe in 1986, 242 federal railway wagons with the contaminated whey feed kept the German public busy for a long time.
