Molly Maguires

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Molly Maguires is the name of a secret Irish miners' association that was active in the Pennsylvania coal mines in the United States in the late 19th century .

The group was considered violent, although there was never any clear evidence that the acts of violence assigned to the group were actually carried out by a secret organization. The group was named after Molly Maguire, a leader of an Irish secret organization around 1840.

The story of Molly Maguires was filmed in the USA with Sean Connery and Richard Harris based on a model by Arthur H. Lewis under the title Cursed to Judgment Day (English: The Molly Maguires ; USA, 1970).

In the novel The Valley of Fear by Arthur Conan Doyle , the Molly Maguires are compared with the criminal group of the Scowrers described there .
