Molly Yard

Molly Yard (born July 6, 1912 in Shanghai , China , † September 21, 2005 in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania , USA ; born Mary Alexander Yard ) was a women's rights activist and president of the National Organization for Women ( NOW ) from 1987 to 1991 .

Life

Molly Yard was born in Shanghai to Methodist missionaries and grew up in Chengdu . In the 1930s she graduated from Swarthmore College , a co-educational college .

In 1953 she moved to Pittsburgh, where she supported David L. Lawrence in 1958 and the presidential elections in 1960 by John F. Kennedy and in 1972 by George McGovern .

Yard became an active member of the NOW in 1971 and joined the national NOW movement in 1978. She supported the fight for women's rights and donated over a million dollars for this purpose. In 1987 she was elected President of NOW until she resigned in December 1991.
