Molo (Iloilo City)
Molo is one of the seven boroughs of Iloilo City , capital of the Iloilo Province . It is located on the south coast of Panay Island on the Strait of Iloilo in the Philippines . With 70,318 inhabitants (2010 census), Molo ranks second among the city districts after Jaro .
Originally founded in 1581 by the Spanish general Ronguillo de Peñalosa as the Pariancillo de Molo or Chinese Quarter, the municipality was just a few kilometers from the Spanish settlement of Villa de Arevalo . Commercial trade once flourished here and served as the main entry point for Chinese immigrants to Panay. It is also the place of origin of the popular pasta dish "Pancit Molo". Molo was occasionally haunted by Muslim pirates from Mindanao and was mainly Christianized by the Jesuits and Dominicans. The center of the municipality is the Plaza Molo, where the Fiesta de Molo takes place every year in June . The historic Iglesia de Santa Ana or better known as the Molo Church is also located here. The main commercial street is MH del Pilar Street, where today there are two universities, a technical college, 3 public schools, private luxury hotels and a number of shops.
Molo has been a borough of Iloilo City since 1937.
